F. School Spotlight
Rationale:
Good evening Board President Snow, members of the board and Superintendent Evans. We are pleased to present our top OPS 2018 science fair awardees from the Metro Science & Engineering Fair and the Greater Nebraska Science & Engineering Fair as tonight’s #OPSProud Spotlight.
In March, nearly 300 students from grades 6-12 representing 23 public, private schools as well as home school students from Douglas, Washington and Sarpy counties competed at the 36th annual Metropolitan Science and Engineering Fair. OPS was represented by students from 9 middle schools, 4 high schools and the Zoo Academy. Top projects from 17 categories received plaques, cash prizes of $50 and advanced to the Nebraska Junior Academy of Science held at Nebraska Wesleyan University in April. Seventh grader Hope Lowe from McMillan placed in the top 10 in the state middle school division. Eleventh graders Christina Gilmore and Bria Gilmore from Central High placed in the top 10 in the state high school division. Christina and Bria are also invited to present at the American Junior Academy of Sciences next February in Washington D.C. and will have their research published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Other OPS students who qualified for and participated at Nebraska Junior Academy of Science were Maliik Jones from North High, Imani Butler from King Science Magnet Center, and Evelyn Brown from Buffett. Kevin McGee from Davis Middle School was awarded the Aurietha Hoesing Award for the top 6th grade project and Sneha Sengupta was awarded the Dave Dow Award of Excellence, a top project that did not automatically qualify for the Nebraska Junior Academy Sciences receives this honor, the award is named after and sponsored by the founder of the Metro Science & Engineering Fair. We salute these students for their accomplishments this spring. We’ll now have remarks from Dr. Chris Schaben, Supervisor of Science. |

L. Request for Closed Session
Rationale:
The Omaha Board of Education is authorized by state statute to hold closed sessions. Closed sessions may be held when clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual. Reasons that meet this standard include but are not limited to: (a) strategy sessions with respect to collective bargaining, real estate matters, pending litigation, or litigation which is imminent as evidenced by communication of a claim or threat of litigation to or by the public body; (b) discussion regarding deployment of security personnel or devices; (c) investigative proceedings regarding allegations of criminal misconduct; (d) evaluation of the job performance of a person when necessary to prevent needless injury to the reputation of a person and if such person has not requested a public meeting; and (e) legal advice.
Explanation
At this point, it is appropriate for the Board to meet in closed session for one of the stated matters and/or any other permissible closed session matters in compliance with the law. That the Board hold a closed session: 1. For strategy session with respect to negotiations/collective bargaining clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law. 2. For strategy session with respect to property/real estate matters clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law.
3. For strategy session with respect to pending litigation, or litigation which is imminent as evidenced by communication of a claim or threat of litigation to or by the public body clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law.
4. For discussion regarding deployment of security personnel or devices clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law.
5. For investigative proceedings regarding allegations of criminal misconduct clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law.
6. For personnel and the evaluation of job performance clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law.
7. For discussions of the legal consequences of specific action and legal advice clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest or for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of an individual in compliance with the law. |
