D.1.a. American Civics Committee
Rationale:
In March of 2019, the Nebraska State Legislature revised and signed into law Legislative Bill 399. This bill amends sections 79-724 and 79-727 of the Revised Statutes of Nebraska and are focused on ensuring that youth are given the opportunity to become competent, responsible, patriotic, and civil citizens. A provision of LB 399 renames the Americanism Committee to the American Civics Committee. Other key provisions include ensuring the approved Social Studies curriculum used by the district aligns with the state standards and teaches the foundational knowledge of civics, history, economics, financial literacy, and geography. As a leader in the state for Social Studies education, the Omaha Public Schools is already in compliance with many of the provisions outlined in LB 399. The curriculum, instruction, and assessment currently approved and utilized within OPS elementary and secondary Social Studies courses implement the foundational knowledge, best instructional practices, and prepare all students in the Omaha Public Schools for civic engagement and democratic participation.
