July 10, 2023 at 8:00 PM - Board of Education July Meeting

Rationale:  Notice of the meeting was posted to the SEM Mustang school website, SEM Facebook, and over the school reach notification system for the board meeting to be held on July 10, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. The agenda was available on the SEM Mustang school website.  All proceedings hereafter as shown were taken while the convened meeting was open to the attendance of the public, unless noted as executive session. This meeting was conducted in accordance with the Open Meetings Act, Chapter 84, Article 14 posted in the School Library. 

Rationale:  Before the 2022-2023 school ended I met with our head cook and discussed  my expectations of the lunch program for the 2023-2024 school year.  The main points of the discussion were:

• make 1 more homemade yeast bread for lunch
• make 1 more dessert per week for lunch
• add more variety and items to the salad bar
• serve larger portions on the food trays to the students, too many students state they are still hungry after eating school lunch and then leave school to pick up junk food to finish filling up 
• cook more homemade foods and less frozen precooked foods
• serve a meatless alternative on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent

I am very uncomfortable with the number of students that state they are still hungry after eating our school lunch and then leave school and go downtown to fill up on non-nutritious foods.

I cannot locate in the minutes the last time the lunch prices were approved to be increased.  
The current lunch prices are:
Elementary (PK-6):  Breakfast $1.40  Reduced $ 0.30
                                 Lunch $2.35  $ 0.40
Secondary (7-12):  Breakfast $1.65  Reduced $ 0.30
                               Lunch $2.65  Reduced  $ 0.40
Adult:  Breakfast  $2.25   Lunch  $3.65
Second Milk  $ 0.40

I am proposing we raise all meal prices by $ 0.10
New lunch prices would be:
Elementary (PK-6):  Breakfast $1.50  Reduced $ 0.40
                                 Lunch $2.45  $ 0.50
Secondary (7-12):  Breakfast $1.75  Reduced $ 0.40
                               Lunch $2.75  Reduced  $ 0.50
Adult:  Breakfast  $2.35   Lunch  $3.75
Second Milk  $ 0.50
 

Rationale:  Mr. Franzen has updated and revised the Student and the Activities Handbook.  I have updated and revised the Staff Handbook.  Both handbook include all the new policy changes recommended by KSB School Law Firm and required by law.

Rationale:  Items to be covered in the retreat will be strategic planning including reviewing goals, board roles and responsibilities, board ethics and protocol.

• Monday, August 7

Rationale:  Each June KSB School Law issues policies that need to be revised.

I have attached a summary of the required revisions we received from the KSB School Law.  The policy committee has eight policies they will be discussing and make decisions on before sending them to the board for approval.
