Bellevue East swept the EconChallenge State Finals on April 12th at UN0, winning both divisions.
The State Finals consisted of four rounds of testing spanning Micro, Macro, and International economics. Two divisions competed "Adam Smith" for advanced students operating at the AP or IB level, and "David Ricardo" for students in their first semester of general economics. In total, 71 Adam Smith teams and 120 David Ricardo teams competed this year in a preliminary round to determine the teams that would advance to the State Finals (10 teams in each division make up the State Finals). Bellevue East advanced five teams to the finals (1/4 of the teams there). Bellevue East Tier 1 (Adam Smith Champions) is comprised of: Chloe Brockhaus (team capitan); Elizabeth Foral; Breck O'Grady; and Sara Vance. Elizabeth Foral and Breck O'Grady were David Ricardo State Champions two years ago; Chloe Brockhaus and Sara Vance were David Ricardo State Runners up last year. Bellevue East Price Makers (David Ricardo Champions) is comprised of all freshman: Bennett Schliesser (team captain); Christina Carozza; Caitlyn Conover; and John Cook. The first all freshman team from Bellevue East to win a State Championship. This is the 10th straight year Bellevue East won an EconChallenge state title. Four times in the last ten years they won both divisions; in the other six years they won one of the divisions. Both teams will compete in the National Semifinals. Bellevue East also had three other teams qualify and compete in the State Finals: Bellevue East Keynesians (4th in Adam Smith Division) - Annabelle Carozza; Jacob Coan; Michael Ermitano; and Nathan Sittel. Bellevue East Capital Gain (7th in Adam Smith Division) - Elias Ervin; Johnathon Hutchinson; Kaelie Looney; and Ryan McCully. Elementary students gathered for a morning of fun, learning and putting themselves to the test at Operation Read. Over 300 readers from all 15 elementary schools (Avery, Belleaire, Bellevue, Bertha Barber, Betz, Birchcrest, Central, Fairview, Fort Crook, LeMay, Leonard Lawrence, Peter Sarpy, Twin Ridge, Two Springs and Wake Robin) arrived at the BPS Lied Activity Center, ready to answer questions about the Golden Sower books they have been reading and studying since the fall. The Golden Sower books are the Nebraska children's choice award sponsored by the Nebraska Library Association.
It was the Belleaire Elementary team (Makai Stearn, Cailyn Sheffield, Lizette Romero, Daniela Evans, and Alan Harden) who brought home the traveling trophy at the end of the tournament. The final round came down to a tie-breaker between Belleaire and Wake Robin. All elementary schools were invited to participate. The maximum number of teams per school is six and the maximum number of members per team is five. Classroom teachers, librarians, reading teachers and paraprofessionals all helped coach teams. Students discussed the books and practiced answering questions mostly during recess and after school. Operation Read is coordinated by Kari Schroder (high school librarian) and Deb Kendall (elementary librarian). Special thanks to the Bellevue Public Schools Foundation for supporting this great opportunity for students. |
