5. Open Forum
Background:
Open Forum is an opportunity for patrons to share their thoughts and concerns. The school board will listen, but no discussion takes place and there will not be board action. Board members may ask clarifying questions. The protocol established for open forum is to provide a time limit of three minutes to share concerns. If a patron would like to have a two-way discussion, they are encouraged to schedule a meeting with the superintendent.

6. Recognitions
Background:
The December Character Trait of the Month is "Compassion", which includes caring, sharing, understanding, concern, kindness, charity, and acceptance.

6.a. District Teachers Receive $500.00 Gift Cards for School Programs
Background:
Piedmont Valley Elementary teacher and Stagebarn MS drama coach, Carol Waider and Hereford Elementary music teacher, Amy Richards both received individual gift cards in the amount of $500.00. The money will go towards new supplies to enhance the productions of the drama and music programs.

6.b. Foothills Community Church Donates Thanksgiving Baskets
Background:
The Foothills Community Church in Sturgis donated 14 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need at Sturgis Brown High School.

6.c. SBHS Academy Partners with Meals On Wheels
Background:
The Academy worked in partnership with Meals on Wheels to make and deliver more than 400 meals for local seniors. The students enjoyed making and packaging the meals but really flourished during their interactions with the "more experienced" community members. Mrs. Van Zee, Mrs. Ramirez, Mrs. Wheaton, Mr. Williams, and Mr. Wormstadt chaperoned the trip.
After making, packaging, and delivering the meals, students returned to The Academy building for the annual Academy Thanksgiving dinner! The Thanksgiving dinner was donated by Lynn's Dakota Mart, drinks were donated by Officer Hegstrom, and dessert options were donated by Mrs. Buchholz. PHOTOS |
6.d. SBHS Speech & Debate Coach Earns Diamond Award
Background:
Sturgis Brown High School Speech & Debate coach, Eric Johnson received the "Diamond Coach Award" for the second time in the last six years. Mr. Johnson has been the coach for the past 16 years. This is the highest honor coaches can achieve as a part of the National Speech & Debate Association. Ms. Tamara Voight, who assists Mr. Johnson with the team, is also a two-time winner of the "Diamond Coach Award" while she coached in Watertown and Aberdeen.

Background:

7.b. CTE Innovative Equipment Grant
Background:
The Sturgis Brown High School CTE program received a $170,580.00 grant from the CTE Innovative Equipment Grant Program. Mrs. Keffeler and Mr. Miller will provide a brief explanation of the program.

7.c. Capital Outlay and Technology Proposal
Background:
Curriculum/Technology Director, Beth Johnson will be presenting a proposal on ongoing purchases for infrastructure, FY24 and FY25.

8.b. Advertisement for Bids - SBHS Academy Building and Whitewood Elementary HVAC Systems
Background:
The business office and buildings & grounds department are requesting approval for Skyline Engineering, Inc. to advertise for bids for the SBHS Academy Building and Whitewood Elementary HVAC systems.

8.c. Amend General Fund Budget
Background:
Business Manager, Brett Burditt is requesting the Board to amend the general fund budget by $59,996.00 for a Title I School Improvement Grant at Sturgis Elementary and the ARP Homeless Grant.

8.d. Set the Date and Time for the 2023 School Board Election
Background:
The Board is required each year to set the date for the school board election (SDCL13-7-10). This action must be taken no later than January. The date requested for the election is June 6, 2023 between the hours of seven AM and seven PM.

9. Discussion Items

9.a. ASBSD Legislative Review
Background:
The ASBSD 2022-23 Legislative Delegate Assembly was scheduled for Friday, November 18th. Joseph Urbaniak will give an update on the ASBSD Legislative Review.

9.b. 2023-24 School Calendar
Background:
Attached is the draft calendar proposals for the 2023-24 school year. Final approval is set for the January board meeting. The 2024-25 school calendar is scheduled to be reviewed by the leadership team in December and presented to the Board in January for review.

9.c. School Improvement Plans
Background:
The Superintendents Office and Curriculum/Technology Department are currently working on the State Accreditation Review. The review date is scheduled for January 31, 2023. According to the SD Dept. of Education, school improvement plan(s) must be approved by the school board and, after adoption, becomes an official district document. Attached are the school improvement plans to be reviewed for Board approval in January.

9.d. Christmas Break
Background:
Mr. Wormstadt would like to remind everyone that Christmas break will commence on Thursday, December 22nd and go through Tuesday, January 3rd. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 4th.
