Background:
The following personnel are presented for the board’s consideration:
New Staff (Support Staff): Hilary Loehrer, paraprofessional, Piedmont Valley Elementary, $15.00/hr., eff. 1/9/2023. Resignation (Certified Staff): Stacey Ross, teacher, Stagebarn Middle School, eff. end of the 2022-23 school year. Change of Assignment (Extracurricular): Shane Whidby, assistant boys basketball coach to head boys basketball coach, Sturgis Williams Middle School, $2,563.00, eff. for the 2022-23 school year; Zyairr Johnson-Landoll, head boys basketball coach to assistant boys basketball coach, Sturgis Williams Middle School, $2,034.00, eff. for the 2022-23 school year. 5. Open Forum
Background:
Open Forum is an opportunity for patrons to share their thoughts and concerns. The school board will listen, but no discussion takes place and there will not be board action. Board members may ask clarifying questions. The protocol established for open forum is to provide a time limit of three minutes to share concerns. If a patron would like to have a two-way discussion, they are encouraged to schedule a meeting with the superintendent.

6. Recognitions
Background:
The Character Education Trait for the month of January is "Respect," which includes honor, tolerance, consideration, self-respect, respect for others, and respect for property.

6.a. Pete Wilson Receives Regional VII Principal of the Year
Background:
Sturgis Brown High School Principal, Pete Wilson, was nominated by other area principals in the region and was chosen as one of three regional principals of the year.

6.b. ProStart/Culinary Arts Receives Grant
Background:
Sturgis Brown High School Chef Joseph Koons and the ProStart/Culinary Arts program received a grant from the SD Retailer's Association in the amount of $2500.00.

6.c. Meade School District Receives Donation from Sturgis Rally Charities Inc.
Background:
The school nurses, along with the Meade School District, received a generous donation of $5000.00 to bring the Delta Dental Mobile Program to the Meade School District. This donation pays for Delta Mobile to serve students twice per year by providing dental exams and X-Rays, cleanings, fillings, sealants, fluoride varnish, and dental education.
Abbie Waitman, social worker with the Meade School District, received a $3000.00 donation from Sturgis Rally Charities, Inc. to help assist families struggling to pay for school lunches. |
6.d. Stagebarn Middle School student council purchased supplies to provide students-in-need with 10 food baskets before winter break.
The Cirque Dream Story Production donated free tickets to Stagebarn Middle School families for their show that was held at The Monument in Rapid City on December 9. Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont donated a large sum to Stagebarn Middle School. The money will be used to stock the "student needs" closet with items like winter coats, shoes and any other school supplies for students that do not have them. |
6.e. Sturgis Elementary 1003 Grant Money
Background:
Sturgis Elementary was approved by the SDDOE to receive federal grant money due to being identified as a school that needs to improve its attendance with its ethnicity demographics. Other portions of the money will be utilized to send a select number of teachers to the "Get Your Teach On" professional development session in June.

6.f. Gifted & Talented Students Participated In Fall 2022 Noetic Learning Math Contest
Background:
Several Meade School District elementary and middle school TAG students participated and earned several awards during the Noetic Learning Math Contest that was held this Fall. Middle school students competed against about 5,600 other middle school students nation-wide! Elementary students competed against about 3,000 other elementary school students nation-wide.

7.a. Financial Reports
Background:
The monthly financial reports for the board’s review. Brett Burditt will answer any questions you might have regarding financials.

7.b. 15-Passenger Van Rebid
Background:
In March, the Board accepted a bid from Scott Peterson Motors for the purchase of a 15-passenger high tower van with all-wheel drive in the amount of $58,290.00. Business Manager, Brett Burditt is recommending the Board declare an emergency waiver to rebid the 15-passenger van due to lack of inventory and availability and approve the purchase of the proposed van detailed in the attached quote. A link is also provided to view additional information and photos. Mr. Burditt will answer any questions you may have.

7.c. Amend 2022-23 School Calendars
Background:
Due to the recent weather and school cancelations, the 2022-23 school calendar will need to be amended. Mr. Wormstadt is recommending the district make up three missed days. Snow days will be made up on Monday, February 20th, Thursday, March 16th and Monday, April 10th. The end of the semester will change from Friday, January 13th to Friday, January 20th.

7.e. Amend General Fund Budget
Background:
Business Manager, Brett Burditt is recommending the Board amend the general fund budget by $175,000.00 for the CTE Innovative Grant at Sturgis Brown High School.

7.f. Approve School Improvement Plans
Background:
According to the SD Dept. of Education, school improvement plans must be approved by the school board and, after adoption, become an official district document.

8.a. 2023-24 Rural Calendar
Background:
The rural schools follow a four-day school week. The district is recommending the following rural calendar for the 2023-24 school year. The 2023-24 rural calendar will be brought back in February for board approval.
