3.1. BVH will be here to discuss plans for multiple options going forward.
Discussion:
Darin and Cleve from BVH were present to continue discussing architectural options for meeting the needs of the District in the future. Various combinations of adding on, remodeling, and possibly tearing down the 3 story building were discussed. Creating new and improved classrooms in a new 2-story building, and creating a modern commons area, while expanding the cafeteria, is one option being considered. This option involves tearing down the 3 story (1920s) building. This project has a rough cost estimate of $6-7 million. Darin mentioned the concept of a "Gymnatorium," which is a large space that easily transforms between a gymnasium and an auditorium. This generally includes a synthetic floor, and auditorium-style seating on a bleacher-type structure. This project has a rough cost estimate of 2-2.7 million if done as a sole project. At the request of the Board, the architects also presented their thoughts on updating the Career and Technical Education (Ag and shop) areas. They noted that the space itself is adequate. A dust collection system is needed, as well as remodeling the space, as there is a lot of wasted space and inefficiencies at present. A classroom for robotics could be created, if desired. The rough cost estimate for this project if done alone is $1.5-2 million. This price allows for some new equipment. Grants may be available for some of this project as well. If all 3 of the above projects were completed together, the rough cost estimate would be $9.8-10.9 million. Another option is to remodel the 3 story building instead of tearing it down and rebuilding. This option does allow more square footage, at a rough estimated cost of $7.1-7.8 for this part of the project. If this part is completed along with the creation of a commons area and enlarged cafeteria, as well as renovations to the CTE, the rough cost estimate is $11.6 - 12.3. This includes $500,000 for educating some students off-site, during the year or more that would be required to complete the project. A rough estimate of the cost of an entirely new building (not including a football field, track, parking lot, bus barn, etc) at a new location is $40 million. Finally, a rough drawing of a concept involving keeping the new gym, and renovating the CTE area is its current location, and then adding classrooms to the South of the high school parking lot was presented. The Board was intrigued by this new concept, and asked the architects to further develop the plan so additional discussion could occur. |
