Discussion:
Mike Henderson shared the big difference are the numbers. 26 total for 7th (14) and 8th (12) grade combined compared to 36. 8th grade has three econmomic standards and two civics standards. The social studies team will collabarate to align the curruciulm and standards this summer. After the alignment of curriculum the social studies courses will recevie new textbooks (electronic)
Courtney Polack shared the major difference being the new standards are much more student friendly. The biggest change in American History being the persepctive of all groups. American Histroy has 16 standards, which seems like a lot, they pair well together. Geography has also become more student friendly and condensed to few standards. Fewer standards allow more in-depth learning rather than having to pace through quickly. Andrew Placke shared that the new standards seems to be more skill based. We are using the information (content) to teach skills. The Government standards are geared towards getting more students invovled in local civics. |
