Professional Development - On Friday, March 4th, we met as a staff and did a "street fair". All PLC’s put together a 2-3 minute presentation on the work they are doing as a department and in their classrooms surrounding our campus goal (Literacy). We then did a PD on "Connection Circles" which is a restorative practice and we also broke into 2 groups to complete the circle. We then challenged all of our staff to complete at least 1 connection circle within their classes. Feedback from one teacher: I wanted to let you know that I did the connection circle with my classes on Monday and Tuesday. The 2nd block class liked it, with comments like, "can we do this again?" The class was very receptive and had a good time. What are connection circles (Restorative Circles)? Connection circles are a relationship building process used to promote understanding, share experiences, build relationships, and establish a circle practice. As we move forward with implementing Restorative Practices, we will be utilizing these more. On Wednesday, March 9th, our teacher leadership team met and had a very energizing and productive day. Our day was as follows:
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, March 15th & Thursday, March 17th from 4:15-8:00pm at the Jr/Sr High School. There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, March 18th. March 21st, 2022 is the Pre-ACT for Sophomores. March 22nd, 2022 is the ACT for our Juniors so the day will look differently for our students. Schedule as follows:
Week of April 4th-April 8th: Students in grades 6-8 will participate in the NSCAS Math Assessment. This is a State Test. Week of April 12th/April 13th: Students in grade 8 will participate in the NSCAS Science Assessment. This is a State Test. Week of April 19th-April 22nd: NSCAS Makeup Week April 25th-May 6th: MAP Testing Window opens. Submitted by Brian Gralheer, Assistant Jr-Sr High School Principal/Athletic Director We had a couple successful seasons come to an end over the past few weeks. Some of which were able to garner some impressive hardware:
I have been working with Mr. Croghan on the possibility of starting up a Spring Golf team. He has been gathering some financial numbers and interest levels of some of our students. We currently have approximately 15 students that are genuinely interested in starting a Golf program next Spring. These students have been briefed on the commitment necessary to have a golf team. This will be an ongoing discussion that will also involve the administration and the new AD. I will provide numbers when they are finalized. Submitted by Amanda Coufal, Director of Special Education The IDEA Part B Parent Survey has been sent out to parents of children with disabilities. The Part B survey is due to NDE by April 1, 2022. Thank you to Steve Rose for sending out the survey to the appropriate families! I will be attending A High Tide Floats All Boats Spring Conference on March 31-April 1st in Omaha. This conference is hosted by The National Association of Special Education Supervisors and NDE, which will focus on how to implement universal instructional strategies to ensure equity and access for all. This conference will address the roles and responsibilities of the district, building, and classroom leaders to plan for the implementation of universal instruction with a focus on core (Tier 1) instruction (academics, behavior, and social-emotional learning); evidence-based strategies for leadership and collaboration; the use of data to develop, implement and evaluate; and the role of leaders and facilitators to guide implementation fidelity. This conference will align with our MTSS implementation. Caitlin Roussan (school psychologist), Jenifer Highstreet (special education teacher), and myself will participate in the TIP (Targeted Improvement Plan) training on March 30, 2022 via Zoom. Our TIP plan is due May 1. I will share that plan with you when it is finalized and submitted to NDE. I will also be attending, along with a couple of special education teachers, a Policy and Procedures Workshop at ESU2 on March 21st. NDE will be leading the conversation that will help us organize information to meet compliance for special education policies and procedures. Raymond Central’s Policy 660 was reviewed in June 2021. We will compare this policy to the Policy and Procedures Guidance document to make sure that we have all the necessary components to be in compliance. Submitted by Shelly Dostal, Elementary Principal at Valparaiso/K-5 Curriculum Director We had our MUSTANG awards assembly for third quarter to recognize students on March 10. Curriculum/Instruction/Assessment - I attended the spring NACIA (Curriculum Directors) meeting in Lincoln on March 3. Dr. Michael Dulaney and Mr. Kyle McGowan from NSCA shared legislative updates. Dr. Jeremy Heneger from NDE Statewide Assessment and other NWEA representatives shared updates to NSCAS Growth assessment. With the completion of the winter pilot of NSCAS Growth, NDE and NWEA continue to work together to study comparability measures and streamline the assessment process. I will continue to attend virtual weekly updates throughout the spring. Assessment - Students in grades 3-5 completed the NWEA MAP assessments in February. Individual student reports will be shared with parents during parent-teacher conferences. The 4th grade class in Ceresco was selected to participate in the NAEP; they completed the assessment on February 24. Thank you to Mrs. Egr, Ms. Farr, and Ms. Mestl for their leadership. Preparations are underway for the statewide assessments this spring. All Nebraska juniors will be administered the ACT and RC sophomores will take the PreACT. Ms. Osten and Mrs. Stansberry have been working diligently to get the ACT testing requirements in place. The NSCAS (Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System) Growth summative assessments will be fully implemented this spring. The testing window begins on March 21 and ends April 29, with make-up testing May 2-6. These assessments will measure student achievement relative to Nebraska’s academic standards in English Language Arts (gr 3-8), Math (gr 3-8), and Science (gr 5 and 8) assessment. Most assessments will be administered on line with a few of the students taking alternate assessments according to their IEPs. Mr. Steve Rose will monitor the computer components. Principals and teachers will be scheduling the assessments in their own buildings. Testing proctors were previously trained for the winter pilot NSCAS Growth; the same protocols are in place for the spring NSCAS Growth. Professional Learning - Over the past few professional learning times, Dr. Gary Nunnally and Dr. Caryn Ziettlow have been working with the elementary teachers with ELA standard shifts for 2022-23. The Elementary Leadership team met with Nebraska MTSS Region 2 Support Lead Kala Peyton on March 7 to continue to develop processes around the MTSS structure. I attended the most recent EIR innovator training on February 23. EIR innovators will assist with professional development on March 23 to share how their training is impacting instruction and achievement. PLCs continue to meet and monitor progress on their SMART goals and action steps. Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for March 16 and 17. Families have been asked to schedule their conferences using the on line system PTCfast.com. Report Cards for third quarter will be sent home with parents at conferences as well as the most recent NWEA MAP testing results and FastBridge data. PTO sponsored messages for both elementary's. The Board of Education gave all staff a card and candy. Everyone appreciated the generosity!! Preschool Round-up was held Friday, March 4th for both the 4-year-olds and incoming 3-year-olds. Currently, we have 26 registered for the 4-year-old class and 18 for the 3-year-old class. Ideally we would like to keep the 3-year-old class around 15. Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Egr, Ms. Megan, and Miss DeAnna are discussing some possibilities. The goal was to grow the 3-year-old program. It’s good to see the numbers rising. Miss Megan and Miss Deanna did an excellent job of having the Round-up organized and ready to go. Parents stayed in the classroom for about 10 minutes and then met with Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Egr to review expectations, schedule, and to answer any questions. In the 3-year-old program there were 12 registered and 9 participated. In the 4-year-old program there were 15 registered and 13 participated. The team felt like the day was a great success. RCEF Annual Dinner and Auction - Reminder to all that the annual event is slated for Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the Davey Community Center. Tickets are $50/person for the meal and $20/person for the auction only. The cocktail hour starts at 5:00 p.m., prime rib dinner at 6:00 p.m. and auction at 7:00 p.m. The RCEF board is working hard to make this a great event. Gratitude - The staff was appreciative of the extra work time afforded them on March 11th and also expressed their thanks to the Board of Education for the valentine note and treat. Calendar - Based on the fact that we have only had ONE weather day so far this year, our last student day would be on a Monday. Coming back for a 1/2 day on Monday (May 16) is not a productive course of action. If we have no more weather days in the next month, I may be asking the board to consider having Friday, May 13th, as the last student day. The Leadership Teams are expressing a desire to have some professional planning time on the extra staff day. |
