7.2. High School Football 2020, 2021 seasons.
Discussion:
Head football coach Adrian Alonzo spoke to the board about the upcoming 2020-21 Football season and declaring Wausa as an 8 man or 6 man team. Declarations are due November 30th, 2019. Coach Alonzo provided The Board with a roster of the current students out for football excluding this years Seniors, a projected roster for next year with the upcoming Freshmen, and a list of 6 man teams. Coach Alonzo stated he has had discussion with the assistant football coaches and our AD and their first concern is safety of our students. They want to keep kids out of positions they do not need to be playing because of the lack of numbers. Alonzo feels if we remain 8 man this upcoming year the players safety is a large concern. The football coaching staff wants to maintain an 8 man JV schedule next year so players can learn the game playing against teams their size and get a feeling for success. Alonzo recommended to the board that Wausa declares a 6 man Varsity team next year since we qualify based on the numbers. He hopes this is a short term solution and we can go back to 8 man in the future once the upcoming players have built up their experience and size. Mike Kumm stated the milage of other 6 man teams is what scares him. Otto Woockman stated the safety of players is a valid concern and would be willing to travel if it means the safety of our players. Mark Dawson asked Coach Alonzo if he has considered all other options, like a co-op, and would like to take a look at the provided material and analyze it before making a decision. The Board agreed this football season should be done before making a decision for next year.
