3. Guests
Discussion:
During public comment, Carla Wilken spoke on her concerns of the enforcement of the dress code policy. She stated that students feel that they are shamed and ridiculed by their teachers over dress code violations. She was concerned that students were being punished and losing playing time due to dress code violations. She cited several examples of teachers putting kids down due to their dress/appearance if it violated school policy. She was also concerned that teachers were not being dress coded, and that students and teachers should follow the same rules. She commented that students know what to wear in school and in our community. She talked about the concern for the mental health of students, especially when students are being checked daily in front of their peers. TiAndra Wilken commented on several of the same things, as well as raising the issues of athletic shorts, as well as concerns of the girls' views of their bodies. Comment was also made on the fact that the dress code targeted certain girls, as well as the girls in general, more than the boys. Mr. Hoesing asked both of them if it was the policy, or the implementation that concerned them. Mrs. Wilken replied that it was implementation rather than policy. Mr. Hoesing asked when referring to teachers, if they were referring to the entire teaching staff, or a select few. They replied a select few. Mr. Hoesing and Mr. Kumm thanked them for their time and comments.
