Rationale:  A motion will be necessary if a member of the elected Board is absent.

Rationale:  The Bellevue Board of Education abides by the Nebraska Open Meetings Law.  A copy of the law is posted on the wall of our Board room.

Rationale:  Deb Carlson, President of the Bellevue Education Association, will make a presentation to the Board.

Rationale:  Approve by consent items in section B of the Agenda identified with an asterisk and receive the information and proposals in sections D and E identified with an asterisk.

Rationale:  The attached Minutes of the January 6, 2014, Board of Education meeting were sent to all members of the Board of Education for review.

Rationale:  Acknowledge receipt of the Treasurer's Report for January, 2014.

Rationale:  Approve the payment of claims totaling $1,865,670.25.

Rationale:  Release (1) Kelly Gengel, (2) Mary Ellen Johnson, (3) Leslie Kinney, (4) Barbara L. Mesnard, and (5) Dorothy Thompson from their contracts effective May 22, 2014, and release (6) Monique Holmes from her contract effective July 31, 2014.

Rationale:  Elect (1) Rhonda Stacey to the certified staff for the 2013-2014 school year effective January 8, 2014, subject to her release from any contractual agreements with other school districts.

Rationale:  Mr. Boettger will give an update of our current phone system and discuss the RFP that went out for a new phone system.  He will present the team's recommendation and show the impact that the new phones would have financially in the District and the efficiency of having a managed phone system.

Rationale:  In association with the proposed sanitary sewer improvements for Phase One of the Cedar Grove subdivision, it is necessary for SID 296 to acquire a permanent and temporary easement on Bellevue Public Schools' property for a sanitary force main.

Attached are drawings, legal descriptions, and the contracts for the permanent and temporary easements.

Rationale:  Each year the Board selects legal counsel for the Board of Education.  As in past years, the proposed contract represents a monthly retainer with the firm of Adams and Sullivan.  The proposed contract is a continuation of last year's contract in both services and fees.

Attached is the proposed Legal Services Agreement from the firm of Adams and Sullivan, P.C., L.L.O.

Rationale: 

The Goethe-Institut, an organization of the Federal Republic of Germany, has selected Bellevue West High School as one of their 2013 Award of Excellence recipients. 

Bellevue West student Casey Jones has been selected as one of 9 winners (12,000 students from all over the U.S. and Canada participated) to receive a scholarship to attend a Young Learners' Course in Germany in the summer of 2014.

The Goethe-Institut is dedicated to promoting knowledge of the German language, providing information on Germany's cultural, social and political life, and fostering international cultural cooperation.  

Rationale: 

Bellevue East student Mary LaPorte was selected as a winner of the 2014 National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) Nebraska and SW Iowa Affiliate Aspirations in Computing Award. This is an award for women in computer science with both regional and national awards.  Mary joins another East student, Catherine Storck, who won this award last year. Mary will be recognized, along with her sponsor Derek Babb, at NCWIT’s award ceremony April 6, 2014.

Rationale: 

Bellevue West AFJROTC competed in the 2nd Annual Titan Invitational Drill Event on Saturday, January 25. They brought home a combined 12 trophies from the following events.

Men's Team: Overall Competition Runner-Up; 1st place in Armed Exhibition; 2nd place in Armed Regulation, Armed Exhibition, Overall Armed, and Overall Unarmed.

Women's Team: 2nd place in Unarmed Regulation; 3rd place in Armed Regulation, Unarmed Exhibition, Armed Exhibition, Overall Armed, and Overall Unarmed.

Rationale: 

The National Council of Teachers of English nominated Escape Key, Bellevue West’s student literary magazine, for the highest award, Superior, in the 2013 PRESLM Ranked Magazines. The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.

Student Editors are Braylie Barrier, Caitie Nielson, Lauren Trunick, Ashley Weed, and Sue Yi.  Faculty Advisors are Britton Sullivan and Aaron Stueve.

The attachment is the NCTE Excellence in Student Literary Magazines – 2013 PRESLM Ranked Magazines for Nebraska.

 

Rationale:  Mrs. Brooks will review recent changes to the monthly financial report.

Attached are the pages showing recent changes to the Treasurer's Report.

Rationale:  Mrs. Fjelstad will provide an overview of migrant student services in Bellevue Public Schools.

Rationale:  Information will be provided on District and NSAA academic requirements for interscholastic competition.

Attached is the Student Athlete Grade Point Average Study.

Rationale:  Ms. Bodensteiner and Dr. Rippe will provide an overview of student programs and services to be offered during September 2014.

Rationale:  The administration will provide information about enrollment revenue projections for the 2014-2015 school year.  This information will be very important as the Board begins the budget preparation process in the coming months.

Rationale:  The Board will be provided information to finalize member participation in building level parent meetings.

Rationale:  Kindergarten orientation will be held the week of February 24 for those children who are eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2014.  Children must reach their fifth birthday on or before July 31 of the current year (unless the child is eligible through early entrance assessment) in order to attend kindergarten.

Families will complete registration paperwork at Kindergarten Orientation or they may download paperwork from the Bellevue Public Schools' website and bring with them to orientation.  Families will have an opportunity to explore the classrooms and visit with staff during orientation.  Children are encouraged to attend with their parent/guardian(s).

Rationale:  Public Comment pertaining to items not otherwise on the Agenda must be submitted to the Secretary of the Board five days prior to the Board meeting.  There were no items submitted for Public Comment for this meeting.
