I.G.1. Election of President for 2019
Discussion:
Candy Becher read a statement about the five areas board members encounter confusion on their roles. Board members cannot be the superintendent. The board’s job is to implement policy and not manage day to day items, and the superintendent deals with the employees. Board members must act regarding all children and not just some. The board also acts as a whole. The board members power only exits at the board meeting. Becher said these are a few things to keep in mind when making decisions. She said hopefully she will do half as well as Theresa Seipel did as president. Becher said she would like these reminders added to the board handouts, so they can keep it in mind as they are at meetings.

I.N.1.2. Review Policy 0509.02 Student Memorials and Gifts to School District
Discussion:
Dr. Loeffelholz said this policy was just revised. He said instead of setting up a memorial, he encourages families to set up a scholarship through the foundation. Dr. Loeffelholz said this doesn’t stop students from organizing something on their own. He said the administration tries to help but does not want things to go overboard. Executive Director of Student Service Jason Harris said one thing to keep in mind is, can we do this for every single student? Would we want to do this for every single student. He said if the answer is not yes, then it cannot be done. Dr. Loeffelholz said if there is something that needs to be changed, the administration must look at it and see if it fits. Mike Jeffryes said he agrees and disagrees with this policy. He said it is hard to tell the students they can't grieve. Theresa Seipel said this policy is more like educating students on what is acceptable and not acceptable. Mike Goos said this policy is important because it tells what is and is not acceptable and helps the crisis team. Jason Harris said every request is different and every situation is different. He said the administration needs to make sound decisions based on policy. Molczyk asked what the administration is doing for the crisis team. He said they may need some assistance in dealing with everything. Harris said there will be a meeting Feb. 8, and Dr. Loeffelholz will fill the board in on what was decided to do to help the team. Harris said the team has put all of their work on hold to handle the crisis, and as things get caught up, the team will be in more need of assistance. Dr. Loeffelholz said the policy allowed the administration to slow down and look at what needed to be done. He told the board this will be discussed more at the February meeting.
