I.L.2.2. Destination Imagination Request for Funding for DI Global Finals
Discussion:
The total cost to attend the Global Finals is $25,000 for the teams. The teams are requesting $6,500 from the board, and they will get additional funds from the CPS Foundation. They have also fundraised $4,500 and are committed to raising another $4,000. Dr. Loeffelholz said the parents will pay for the hotels this year. He said this year teams were charged $5,500 per team. He said last year each student paid a fee, and it covered room and board, and this year it did not, which is why the parents agreed to cover this expense. Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Amy Romshek said she also has some funds available that could be used to help fund the trip.

I.P. Superintendent's Report
Discussion:
Dr. Loeffelholz said the fundraising for STEM has been going on for six years. He said recently several companies were invited to discuss where the program is going in the next 10 years. Dr. Loeffelholz said it was discussed with the STEM teachers what the needed are. There were over 30 people in attendance. Dr. Loeffelholz said the focus of the conversation was the next steps for the STEM program and business connection. Executive Director of Student Services Jason Harris and Dr. Loeffelholz attended a second meeting with Community for Kids to discuss early childhood. CHS Assistant Principal Jason Schapmann said the high school has been working to get businesses in town to partner with for job shadowing experiences for students. He said the idea is to recruit and retain our own. There are currently many taking advantage of shadowing experiences. Executive Director of Technology and Operations Leonard Kwapnioski said the Mike Rowe Foundation offers scholarships for kids going into jobs that are underserved. He said the district may want to look into this opportunity for students.

Lost Creek will also be selling May Day Baskets with the proceeds going to flood relief. The CPS staff raised $1,200. I.Q. Board Sharing
Discussion:
Mike Jeffryes said the middle school musical was fantastic it looked like a million-dollar production. He said prom went well and he thanked CMS for letting them use their facility for post prom. Jeffryes said he attended the new board member events at the national conference and learned a lot. Doug Willoughby enjoyed the national conference in Philadelphia a lot. He said he attended a session on resilience and the separation of church and state. Willoughby said he has received his first graduation invite already. Mike Goos said it is the best time of the year to be on the school board with graduation coming up. He said Philadelphia was great convention. He said he purchased books by the keynote speakers and had them signed. Goos said CPS is in a place at where administration and staff could be presenting because there is a story to tell. He said CPS is on the map at the state level and is in a different place then a few years ago. Goos said although the conference was good, there was a lot of repetition from previous years, and CPS could bring more to the table. Dr. Loeffelholz said he and the administration can look into presenting next year in Chicago, and there are many options. He said the state convention is also looking for presentations, so they could come up with something for there as well.
Doug Molczyk said he attended a session on bullying prevention, and a lot of classes he attended had things that CPS is doing already. He said he also attended one on how to deal with negative people. Molczyk said CPS is doing exactly what they the experts are recommending. He said many schools are working at getting kids ready for the workplace right out of high school. Molczyk said the birth rate is not keeping up with the jobs. He said the STEM program is doing that already. Molczyk suggested presenting on how CPS is preparing kids for the work place because it would benefit other districts. Theresa Seipel said she had a wonderful time with her granddaughter. She said she wished she could have gone to Philadelphia. Seipel said she likes that CHS is heading into the health career fields with STEM, and she is excited about the Kramer Early Education Center. She said CPS has always been ahead of the curve, and the story should be told. Candy Becher said she took away from the conference that schools are covering a lot of the areas but are not creating creativity. One of the speakers said writing is what students need and without this skill they won't make it. She said CPS could get creativity by adding arts and making it STEAM instead of just STEM. Becher said it was a great conference and she was thankful she attended. Goos said it is also a great opportunity to network with other school board members. |
