July 15, 2024 at 6:00 PM - July Regular Board Meeting

Discussion:  President Stearns called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and roll call was taken.

Discussion:  Tina Golter gave her report. Her monthly activities involved: tumbleweed and trash removal, watering flowerbeds, deadheading flowers, mowing and trimming, removing large tree branches around football field, sprinkler repairs, and adding rock to overflow parking, 

Discussion:  Dan Robison gave his report. The district did not get the bid for the Gothenburg auction bus. The maintenance truck did get repaired with new tires, u-joints, power steering pump, battery terminal and fan belt. All ten spots are filled up for session two of driver's education which will be at the end of July. Bus drivers are hard to come by. Some of our routes can be handled with smaller fleet vehicles. Driver's would not need a CDL license to drive a fleet vehicle, but would still need to take Level 1 Training, which can be done online. Dan talked with other schools about what they pay bus drivers. Many small fleet vehicles for other schools are in-house fleet drivers. Need to possibly raise the wages to encourage in-house staff or pull in drivers from other places. The training that bus driver's have to take has gotten to be a longer process. 

Discussion:  Ryan Sanger gave his report. Carpet and lights have started to get complete upstairs. The preschool room is getting completed as well. The new DL room is complete along with Miss. Burke and Mr Blecha's offices. LED lights are getting replaced throughout the school. Rochester Midland did their quarterly check. Consolidated came to replace their blue box. It was then, throwing out a code for a second phone line. Emergency Services were called to diagnose the code. Waldinger's was called because the unit went out above the library. A new unit would cost around 10,000 and hopefully would get completed before school. They will get prices to Ryan on how to fix it.

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster gave Mr. Larson's report. Mr. Larson has created a form to help with non-discrimination and anti-harassassment in the district. 

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster gave her report. Brady Public Schools has received accreditation. Mrs. Foster met with NASB about the school strategic plan. Summer projects that have been completed include: DL Room, Sensory Room, paint in the cafeteria and upstairs hallway, new carpet upstairs, training room and cage room reorganized, and gym floors complete. Projects that still need completed include: LED Lights input, Carpeting, Stair wells, construction projects, and install new dishwasher. The district has purchased a new website to improve communication. All school staff and board members are invited to a BBQ on August 9th.

Discussion:  General Fund is under budget 25.09% and Lunch Fund is under budget 22.64%. SEM school purchased unused desks for $500. Summer School supplies will get submitted to get reimbursed by the state in the Spring. Monthly bills from local vendors are needed the first part of the month. Also discussed insurance for directors as a benefit for their service.

Discussion:  Policy Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, July 17th to review the entire 5000 series.

Discussion:  Facility committee walked around the building after the June meeting. Bryan asked if the construction would be done before school starts. Ryan Stearns confirmed that construction will be completed. 

Discussion: 

As prior news reports indicated, the Governor plans to call a special session for late July and through part of August. We now understand the start date for the special session will be Thursday, July 25th. The first three days will include July 25th, 26th and 27th (Saturday). According to the Rules of the Legislature (Rule 9), the first three days of a special session constitute the period of bill introduction. It is not unusual for a special session to include Saturday work days. We won't know the exact language for the official object of the special session until the Governor announces it. However, it's fairly obvious that property tax relief and school funding will be the focus.

Discussion:  Current events coming up include: August 20: Area Membership Meeting, October 2-3: Labor Relations Conference, November 20-22: State Education Conference, December 5: New Board Member Workshop. Marge also talked about the alumni reunion during Brady Day's. 

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster created a hourly wage schedule for classified employees.  Each year of employment, employees increase in hourly wage by 4%. This promotes longevity and transparency. Weekly it will cost around $12,780 with a 4% increase. 

Discussion:  The district currently pays $22.50. Mrs. Foster recommends to do $25-30. Ryan Stearns recommends to do $5 more to do $27.50. Ryan Stearns suggests if a staff member wants to drive the bus maybe make it a flat rate as an extra duty. Bryan and Marge thought it needed to be $30 an hour. It was decided to do a $10 increase. The board will revisit in January to see if any recruitment has happened. A route may get discontinued depending on how many kids are riding. 

Discussion:  Currently the activitiy bus driver pay is $15. Mrs. Foster recommends a $1 increase. Ryan Stearns recommends a $2 increase. Marge recommends doing $20 an hour. It was decided to make it $17 a hour. 

Discussion:  Currently the district pays $12/hour for individual helping with clock, books, etc. The minimum wage goes up to $15/hour in January. Mrs. Foster recommends increasing to $15/hour.

Discussion:  The board would like to provide insurance to the four director positions at the school. 

Discussion:  Dues are $850 a year. 

Discussion:  Student/Parent, Staff, and Activity handbooks were updated to reflect current laws and policies. There will be some minor edits added after approval. 

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster appreciates the feedback and honesty. Two items that Mrs. Foster wanted to address: it was commented that students mentioned Mrs. Foster (Ann) was always in a meeting. Mrs. Foster admitted in the second semester she was in more meetings working on grants and strategic planning but, suggested the chain of command states students need to be directed to Mr. Larson first. She also mentioned she would like to be addressed as Mrs. Foster and not Ann in the workplace. Mrs. Foster also mentioned there was a comment of a situation that happened before her contract started, which she was evaluated on. Mrs. Foster would have liked to be evaluated on situations that happened during her contract period and not before. 
Ryan Stearns mentions to click unsure instead of clicking a lower number, if you aren't sure what to choose. Mrs. Foster mentions she sees evaluations as of a person's whole work performance, and not based on just one hard situation that happened. 

Discussion:  Assign Superintendent Foster as Title IX Coordinator and Decision Maker.
Assign Principal, Larson as the Title IX Investigator.

Discussion:  The district's current telephone system is 8 years old and is analog.  Moving to an ip phone system will increase security and accessibility, reduce the use of hardware and lower our monthly rate.  An IP system provides us with more options for all calls or calling certain classrooms at one time. It also reduces long distance fees. It will also be compatable with the PA speakers that are being installed in the "dead areas". The total cost is $12,960 and will be paid for by our Safety Grant. Ryan Stearns recommends checking to make sure the telephone will dial 911, because a separate part will be needed to tie into the fire alarm.
