Discussion:
Mary Winn recognized Gering high school junior Brock Parker's achievement of scoring a 36 on his ACT exam; The highest score attainable. Next curriculum meeting is scheduled for May 31, 2018.

Discussion:
Ty Kayton of Hausmann Construction updated attendees on the progress of the high school improvements currently underway, a timeline of upcoming projects, and tentative turn-over dates. Discussion and questions were opened to attendees.

Brent Holliday shared an update on recent committee meetings held with representatives of Hausman Construction. Also highlighted outcome of meetings with First Student regarding bus services to be offered in the upcoming school year.

Discussion:
Superintendent Bob Hastings offered compliments to all staff members who assisted with graduation preparations citing a very successful ceremony. Upcoming seniors will graduate on May 19, 2019 with planning currently underway. Due to the anticipated ongoing construction at WNCC, administrators are discussing alternative locations for next year's ceremony. Further praise was given to track / field and tennis athletes after a strong showing at state competition as well as the impressive academic achievements of Brock Parker with his perfect ACT exam score. An overview of the construction project was shared in conjunction previous reports provided by Ty Kayton.

7.1. Discuss, consider, and take all necessary action regarding the approval of a resolution recognizing Gering High School Junior, Mr. Brock Parker, for scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT.
Discussion:
A RESOLUTION to honor and recognize Brock Parker, a Junior at Gering High School, for earning a perfect score on the American College Test (ACT).
WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of the Gering Public Schools Board of Education should pause to pay tribute to those students who, through their natural talents and commitment to excellence, have distinguished themselves; and WHEREAS, Brock Parker is one such exceptional student who earned a perfect score on the ACT; approximately 0.1% of the students tested scored a perfect 36 on the ACT; and WHEREAS, through diligent study, steady composure during examinations, and steadfast commitment of time and talent, Brock has achieved outstanding academic success and has joined the ranks of the best and brightest students from the Panhandle, the state of Nebraska, and our country; and WHEREAS, as a high achieving student, Mr. Parker is enrolled in the highest level classes at Gering High School; and WHEREAS, in addition to his extraordinary academic skills, he competes for the speech team, is on the quiz bowl team, the math club, and also plays on the tennis team; and WHEREAS, Brock’s noteworthy achievement is a tremendous source of pride for his family, his school, and his community; and WHEREAS, Mr. Parker’s dedication to excellence is clearly deserving of the respect, admiration, and commendation of the Gering Public Schools Board of Education; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GERING PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION, that we hereby commend and honor Brock Parker, a Junior at Gering High School, for his impressive achievement of earning a perfect score on the ACT, and extend to him our best wishes for a happy and successful future.

Discussion:
Supplemental packets were provided by DA Davidson representative, Andy Forney. Due to recent legislation changes this option was presented as levy neutral funding solution to ensure school security and ADA needs will continue to be met.

9. Board Comments
Discussion:
All board members expressed high praise for the academic achievements of Brock Parker. Mary Winn added that she had attended the final jazz and band concerts which had filled the auditorium, and commended Mr. Raines and his students for outstanding performances. Mary Winn also highlighted the speeches provided by students at this year's graduation ceremony citing these as a "class act" as she noted the audience was wholly engaged. She also reminded all those present at the meeting of the upcoming Teacher Appreciation breakfast to be held on Friday, May 25, at 7:30 am, encouraging attendance at this joint effort hosted annually by the board and GEA where teachers are recognized for their service. In addition to recognizing administrators for overcoming the seating challenges faced during preparations for the Gering High School graduation ceremony, Brent Holliday spotlighted the accomplishments of the VALTS students after he and BJ Peters had attended ceremonies. He also expressed gratitude to George Schlothauer and staff for serving our area youth through the VALTS program. Brent further noted the success of the VALTS guitar project in which instruments are handcrafted solely by the students, and purchased by supporting businesses. Brady Shaul shared kudos for the availability of online broadcasting provided for the Gering High School graduation ceremonies, adding excitement for the progress being made on the high school building improvements. In closing, BJ Peters again congratulated Brock Parker on his accomplishment stating "many doors have been opened" due to the effort put forth in reaching this goal. Furthermore, he recognized the VALTS program for recovering nearly an entire graduating class since 1998, and the energy infused into the program by George Schlothauer. As a board member for over 12 years, BJ stated that he always finds delight in attending graduations ceremonies which highlight such achievements and accomplishments.
