4.1. Recommended Instructional Materials Update: English Language Arts
Discussion:
At this time we will present the recommendations for purchasing updated English Language Arts instructional materials. Later in the meeting, the Board will be asked to approve the purchase of the materials. This would be the opportunity for the Board to ask questions about the materials, the cost, etc.
I am very appreciative of the process that was utilized and the level of consideration that was invested by our professionals in the selection of these materials. English Language Arts encompasses a broad range of domains that include Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Additionally, the developmentally appropriate approaches and skill gradients can vary greatly across the age/grade continuum. It may be the most complex of areas of reach consensus around pedagogy and supporting resources (i.e. instructional materials). I'm pleased with the professional, collaborative, fact-driven, and systematic manner that our people engaged in this important decision-making process.

Discussion:
Mrs. Reinke presented the board with the Heartland ELA adoption process. She discussed the "why" they use this process in an effort to create coherence with material as well as vertical alignment. It also ensures that everyone involved with the process has a voice in choosing ELA materials. She also gave the board a timeline of the process, and committee members involved. The group of committee members reviewed the materials through the lens of the ELA Instructional Vision statement of "In our ELA classrooms, we believe in: Explicit, systematic instruction that promotes foundations of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. A collaborative, relevant, and engaging environment where students feel safe to expand their learning. " as well as through an evaluation tool/rubric based on this vision. Through the process, the committee selected "Amplify CKLA" for K-5th, "Amplify ELA" for 6th-8th and "my Perspectives" for 9-12th. Mr. Carr shared that the difference in materials for 9-12 was due to Amplify not having ELA materials for that grade level.
Following the presentation, board members followed up with questions around current materials being used as well as questions on proposed ELA materials.
