I. Food Service September Meeting
Discussion:
Meeting Attendees: Mr. Grammer, Mr. Pavlik, Dr. Hoesing, Jeff Andel, Vickie Mefford, Jaime Ramirez, Carol Hastings, Shelly Frieze, Marlene Hartman, Nellie Muehlich, and Joy Jenkins
1. Food Service Budget and Finance:
We reviewed the 2012-13 Food Service budget and cash balance at the end of the year. We also introduced the 2013-14 budget and visit about projected revenue, individual lunch account balances, and food purchase program for the 2013-14 school year. In summary, the food program generated $20,000 more then they expended during the 2011-12 school year. See attached budget information.
2. Breakfast Program:
The group discussed the breakfast program and the participation in regular breakfast and Grab-n-Go meal. It was reported that the middle school served over 200 breakfasts per day (200% increase) already in the program and that the high school was served 900 more breakfasts this year than they served during September 2012. It was agreed that we would continue to monitor the program and see if the numbers hold for the next month.
3. Lunch Program:
Discussion on the development of the monthly menu for each building. Staff was commended for their work on making sure accurate carb counts were included on the menu and the impact this has on our program for students with special diet requirements.
4. Misc. Items: Student Meal Cards, Staffing, Negative Balances, etc...
We discussed staffing at each building. Nellie will be moving from the middle school to the elementary building on October 1st and Lilis Harris will be moving from the elementary to the middle school.
The group reviewed student meal tickets and our plan to move to students managing their cards at the middle school rather than writing down their number. Mr. Grammer will work with his staff to see how this transition works.
It was reported that all groups have at least 15 minutes from the time the last group receives their meal and lunch period is over. We also discussed the meal program at the satellite schools and that the staff was doing a great job of managing food temperature and keeping records current.
We also discussed how to deal with negative student lunch balances. It was decided to make sure all students get something to eat, even if we have to provide them an undocumented meal. This meal may not meet federal program guidelines, but would provide them with a healthy alternative until the parents either complete forms and qualify for support or arrangements have been made to allow the student to eat in the regular food program. Concern was expressed about what this meal would be and how that meal would be paid for. The group agreed to investigate options for meals for students with negative balances. As for parents with negative balances, principals are to work with parents on a plan to pay forward rather than always trying to catch up.
The group discussed the response to staff asking about meal costs in comparison to student meals. The reason for the meal price is that adult meals are non-reimbursed meals. Reminder: staff is not allowed to have negative balances on our books.
