June 10, 2024 at 6:00 PM - June Regular Board Meeting

Discussion:  President Stearns called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Roll call was taken. 

Discussion:  We, at Brady Public Schools, strive to create a positive culture in which all learners reach their fullest potential as EAGLES!

Discussion:  Learning Center is wanting to get unveiled at Brady Days and will estimately begin the project by May 2025. Cost estimate was given out so grants can be applied for. Cost estimate is $664,714.05. The village currently as $140,000 from a donation. The school and the village will provide 50% of the project cost. Mrs. Foster proposed to do a silent bid auction during Brady Day's of all the surplus items from the school. Fundraising tiles will also be available to purchase during that weekend. The older car that was donated to the school might be added to the auction if a salvage title can be made. A work session will be on July 10th at 5:30 PM prior to the Village of Brady meeting at Brady Public Schools-- Science Room. 

Discussion:  Tina Golter gave her report. During this past month, mowing, trimming, tumbleweeds and trash removed. A pine tree was removed. New flags were put on the flagpole. Charlie's North Platte Plumbing submitted a proposal to bore in a water line of $1,432.00 by the elementary windows. The facilities will discuss the proposal. Beveridge Well Drilling has been called about the install of sleeve for commons sprinkler repair. 

Discussion:  Dan Robison gave his report. Maintenance truck is at Gator Road to fix the power steering pump and front end work, which will be about $3300. It will also need new tires in the near future. The 97 van was picked up from the online auction in the Fall, and the chain-link fence was picked up. Gothenburg is selling a 14 passenger bus by silent auction to the highest bidder which closes the 15th. The bus could replace the old suburban and be used on the Gothenburg route. Dan thinks a bid over 6,000 might win. Driver's Education has begun. Seven students are participating in the first session. 

Ryan Stearns recommends to move the talk of putting in a bid for the bus to the facilities committee which will be meeting after the regular meeting. 

Discussion:  Ann Foster gave Ryan Sanger's report. The stage set up for graduation and awards night went well. All new sports banners have been hung up. Ryan is recommending to repaint the new gym next Summer to cover up where the old banners were. The main gym and old gym floors have been completed. The demo on the DL room is complete and everything has been removed. While removing the carpet in the board room, asbestos was found. All asbestos was removed properly. Nebraska Fire and Safety came to change one of the boxes for the system. 

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster gave Mr. Seamann's report. Would like to recognize Payton Stienike for medaling at the NSAA State Track Meet. Payton placed 5th in the 300m hurdles and 3rd place in the 100m hurdles. Both gyms got started on June 4th. Shot clocks have been put up along with new banners. Currently waiting on some parts from the electricians to finish the maintenance on football field lights. 

Discussion:  Mr. Larson gave his report. Mr. Larson has started reviewing the student handbook and staff handbook. He also reviewed KSB student and staff handbook for suggestions to add. Mr. Larson went to the Powerschool training in Kearney on June 5th. Certified and Classified staff evaluations have been completed. Nineteen students took the ACT in May. May 3rd was paper pencil and May 13th was taken online. Data shows that test scores were higher with students that took the ACT online. Next year, the ACT will be taken all online. Next year, Mr. Blecha will also be conducting a prep ACT class for the students getting ready to take it. 

Discussion:  Mrs. Foster gave her report. Summer Lunch Fund Equipment Grant of $15,000 was approved. Perkins Round 2 for $7,500 has been applied for. Total awarded so far is $356,092.64. ESSER III, NDE has denied all reimbursement for professional development trips. The money will be used to pay for staff tuition. Mrs. Foster will work with NDE to amend the grant to use any extra money that isn't used for tuition for other areas of the school. Maggie Burke has filled the technology coordinator. Amanda Bourge and Martina Davis have filled the two para educator positions. To coordinate with state statue, the library has to remain open throughout the day. Another para may need to be hired to fill a library aide position. Negative lunch balances keep getting cleared. Attendance for 23-24 school year is as follows: K-6 1st and 2nd semester 95%, 1st semester 7-12 - 90.29%, and 2nd semester 7-12 - 90.79%. Mrs. Foster also mentioned that she will be working an extra 10 contract days in June. She proposed to the finance committee about paying her for the extra days. 

Discussion:  The Brady Board of Education would like to publicly recognize Ms. Tonja Shaw, Summer School Coordinator and the other Summer School teaching and support staff and a fantastic start to a fun and engaging Summer Camp! 

Mrs. Foster also received a note from a parent explaining how happy they were about how engaging this year of Summer School is. 

Discussion:  We will finish the 4000 this month and move on to the 5000 series in July.

Discussion:  The finance committee reviewed receipts and expenditures for the month.
General Fund is 22.7% under budget (We spent 69% of this month's budget)
Lunch Fund is 16.5% under budget
All accounts are reconciled. 

The finance committee discussed Mrs. Foster's extra 10 contract days. These days don't include, the time at sporting events, dances, weekend school, or helping custodians clean after events as these are all extra duties of the superintendent. Mrs. Foster suggested to pay for 8 days and carry over 2 vacation days, but would prefer to be paid for all 10 days as it is already hard to take the assigned vacation days. The Finance committee would like to suggest to pay Mrs. Foster's extra contract day at her daily rate of $479. Bryan Franzen would like to move this item to Action Item 11.12. for payment of the extra 10 contract days.

Discussion:  Attached for the board to review was the Summer Legal Update from Perry Law Firm which covers the following:Title IX, FLSA, PWFA, Noncompetes, Open Meetings Act, Grade Retention, and Option Enrollment

NASB is going to start a board member academy. This will help board members from the start of their term to the end of their term on their roles of a board member. 

Discussion:  Ms. Shaw gave the Summer School report. Summer school started on Monday June 3rd. It goes from 8:30-11:30 and has a tropical theme. Initially, invitations were sent out to teacher recommendations. After those responded, registration was opened to anybody. Twenty-six K-5 elementary and ten 6-12th graders are attending. In the first week 98% attendance and added four new students and as of today (June 10th) two more came so attended is up to 42. Perfect Attendance is rewarded into a drawing for $10 gift cards. Tropical Sno will be coming on June 13th for students that have perfect attendance for that week. Teachers are doing a fantastic job of planning a variety of fun and engaging activities. Pictures have been added each day to promote and encourage students to attend. Summer Camp (new name instead of Summer School) has been a great success. There has even been some interest from preschool aged students, which will be talked about for next year. Credit Recovery students have also been showing up this summer, along with students making up hours. 

Discussion:  Americanism Report presented by Principal Larson. This report is required by state statute to be presented to the board twice a year.  The first report was presented at the October Board meeting.

Discussion:  This policy has not been adopted. The entire board read the policy in its entirety.  It serves as a reminder for which policies need to be reviewed by the board annually and that all policies only need a single reading (by policy or committee) in order to pass and adopt the policy.

Discussion:  Hiland Dairy contract was attached. The cost of 1% white milk is $0.44 and chocolate milk is $0.45. This is an increase from last year.

Discussion:  Last year the board voted to increase breakfast $.05 and lunch $.10. Mrs. Foster gave a comparison from area school on lunch prices. Average price between 11 schools: Breakfast $1.97, K-6 Lunch: $3.11, 7-12 Lunch: $3.41, Seconds: $1.69. It has been talked with the kitchen to reduce the kitchen budget and to use more commodities and less frozen food. Bryan Franzen recommended the following prices: Bfast $1.80, K-6 Lunch $2.80, $7-12 Lunch $3.20, Seconds $1.50, Adults $4.25, and extra milk/juice .55. 
 

Discussion:  This policy was reviewed by the policy committee on 12-6-23 and the committee recommends adopting as written. An added addition to the policy is that any student that is past negative $25, the student will receive a "courtesy meal" such as a plain sandwich. Bryan Franzen recommends working with the kitchen staff about how they are talking with students of negative balances. 

Discussion:  Approve the hiring of Maggie Burke for Tech Coordinator. Maggie is a Brady graduate with 6 years of teaching experience. She has a Computer Science degree and a BMIT degree.  She has taught in both Lincoln and Omaha. She will be a great asset to our school. 

Discussion:  The school would like to continue to rent the ground east of the school parking lot and football field to be used for student parking and additional parking for games deemed as the "overflow lot". Annual fee of $500.

Discussion:  Attached is a quote for keyless access to the school.  The safety and security grant would fund this, as we budgeted $22,500 within the grant for this as well as another $10,000 in the Early Childhood grant. Office doors, commons door, playground door, weight room door, double doors by gym, shop door, north east door will all be keyless entry. All the locks will be cloud based. Key cards will be operated. Notifications will be sent if doors are left open.

Discussion:  This is a policy that the Board is required to review each year. This policy is from our new policy service with KSB. The policy committee has not reviewed this policy yet, so the entire Board reviewed it and has no changes. 

Discussion:  We have had several inquires from families in other communities (who are not current and will not be current) option enrollment students wanting to bring their children here for Preschool.  After speaking to other Superintendents, setting a weekly enrollment cost is reasonable. The recommendation is to set enrollment cost at: $60 per week ($240 per month).

Discussion:  There were some duties this year that more than likely won't happen next year. It was discussed to carry over vacation days, but vacation days were hard to take this year, so getting paid would be preferred. The finance committee mentioned this wouldn't be a continuous action each year.
