2. Presentations -
2.A. Recognition of Horizon and Sunrise Middle School Gold Award Quiz Bowl Team Members and Coaches
Rationale: 

On March 8th, the combined efforts of team members from Horizon Middle School and Sunrise Middle School brought home the Gold Award in the 23rd annual Quiz Bowl Tournament hosted by ESU 10 at UNK.  They went undefeated in their matches for the second year in a row and vanquished first place out of 33 teams, earning them the opportunity to again participate in Nationals held in Chicago this summer. 

Quiz Bowl team members are: Brad Donovan, Eli Cordes, Alec McKee, and Brian Badura from Horizon; and Jillian Moomey, Lucy Bartee, Matthew Dahlke, Nolan Eatherton, Jordan DeVries, Jayven Krepel, and Braden Swenson from Sunrise, all led by their team captain, Tyler Wong.  Team Kearney is coached by Emily Davidson and Barb Wegner.

 

2.B. Recognition of KHS State Speech Contest Winners & Coaches
Rationale: 

The KHS Speech Team placed third in the state in March.  Individual state champions included:

Nathan Bonsall, humorous prose; Jordan Wong, extemporaneous speaking; and Asael Arevalo, Nathan Bonsall, Benjamin Dillon, Connor Garrison and Christopher Kingsley, oral interpretation of drama.

They are coached by Jonathan Anderson.  We will recognize the speech team members and coaches for their accomplishments.

2.C. Recognition of the KHS HOSA State Leadership Conference Winners & National Qualifiers
Rationale: 

HOSA Future Health Professional students from Kearney High School attended the Nebraska State Leadership Conference held at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, March 20-22, 2016.  Nine students competed in online testing and onsite at UNMC.  The following students qualified for Nationals to be held in June in Nashville, TN.:

Callie Stull and Fatima Paredes - Career Health Display for their presentation on psychology

Jessica Fritson and Jazy Miles - Alternates for their presentation on radiology

HOSA Bowl Team - Caleb Capellan, Jazy Miles and Jessica Fritson

Katie Thorn - Will be recognized for "Barbara James Service Award"

 

2.D. Recognition of Dr. Jay Dostal, Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals' "2016-2017 Nebraska High School Principal of the Year"
Rationale:  We will recognize Dr. Jay Dostal, Kearney High School Principal, for being named the Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals' "2016-2017 Nebraska High School Principal of the Year".
2.E. Report from the KHS Skilled and Technical Sciences SLC Advisory Committee
Rationale:  Stacey Weaver, chair; and Kelly Christensen, vice chair of the KHS Skilled and Technical Science Advisory Committee, will report to the Board of Education on the work of that committee.
2.F. Facilities Update
Rationale:  Kent Cordes from BD Construction will report to the Board of Education on the progress made on the new high school project, Horizon addition and renovation and project, and Sunrise addition and renovation project.

2.I. Announcement of "Celebration of Excellence" Event on April 28, 2016
Rationale: 

President Nickel will announce plans for the Kearney Public Schools and Kearney Public Schools Foundation "Celebration of Excellence" Reception on Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M. in the Kearney Holiday Inn Ballroom, to honor our employees for their years of service, Foundation award winners and grant recipients, and this year's retirees.  Reservations for the event may be obtained through the Kearney Public Schools Foundation Office.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Rationale:  We have received an offer to purchase this year's construction technology class project house located at 1609 East 47th Street from John and Tennille Allison in the amount of $279,900.00.  We will ask the Board of Education to approve this Purchase Agreement.
Recommended Motion(s):  Move to approve the Purchase Agreement with John and Tennille Allison for the purchase of the Kearney High School construction technology class project house at 1609 East 47th Street, Kearney, NE, for the sale price of $279,900.00, and authorize the administration to sign all necessary forms and documents to execute said sale.
4. Regular Agenda - Business
4.A. Approval of Purchase of a Handicapped Lift Bus
Rationale: 

For the 2016-2017 school year, the Transportation Department would like to retire the 2008 Collins Type A, 14-passenger route bus and replace it with a Type A, 12-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift.  The change is necessary in order to accommodate the growing population of wheelchair-bound students in the district and do so in a timely manner.

We invited 3 companies to bid the new bus and offered 1 bus as a trade-in.

The bids were as follows:

Rationale:  We have solicited bids for a new walk-in freezer at Sunrise Middle School.  Three bid requests were sent to Sysco of Lincoln, Arctic Refrigeration of Kearney, and Cash-Wa Distributing of Kearney.  Cash-Wa was the only company that submitted a bid in the amount of $45,825.00.  We believe this to be a fair and reasonable bid and will recommend that it be accepted.

Rationale: 

In preparation for the next school year, the district has studied its staffing needs.  The Board of Education has been presented with a staffing plan that meets increasing enrollments, additional staff to meet our special needs, the opening of the new high school, and fully staffing Buffalo Hills Elementary School.
