2.A. Recognition of NSAA Believers and Achievers Recipient - Katie Higgins
Rationale:  Katie Higgins, a senior at Kearney High School, was chosen this school year as a recipient of the Nebraska School Activities Association's "Believers and Achievers" award.  We will recognize Katie at the May 13th Board of Education meeting.
2.B. Recognition of Omaha World Herald Academic All State Team Members Jordyn Dahlke and Tim Smith
Rationale:  Jordyn Dahlke has been named to the Academic All-State 1st team for the West-Central region, and Tim Smith has been named to the Academic All-State 2nd team for the West-Central region, by the Omaha World Herald.  These students were chosen from 992 students from Nebraska and Iowa.  The judges weighed classroom performance - reviewing curriculum and the rigor of the senior schedule - and involvement in school activities, academic competitions and school leadership.  We will recognize Jordyn and Tim at the May 13, 2013 Board of Education meeting.
2.C. Recognition of FBLA National Qualifiers - Collin Sears and Haley Oberbrockling
Rationale:  We have two individuals from Kearney High School who have qualified for national FBLA competition - Collin Sears by completing the requirements for the Business Achievement Award - America Level, and Haley Oberbrockling in Accounting II.   We will recognize their achievements at the May 13, 2013 Board of Education meeting.
2.D. Recognition of KHS FCCLA State Winners and National Qualifiers
Rationale:  Following are the results from the FCCLA State Competition:

Megan Dubowsky - Gold-State Champion & Qualifying for Nationals - Leadership
Brian Whetstone, Sarah Polter, Anna Kugler, Nathan Leach, and Jessie Harris - Gold-State Champion and Qualifying for Nationals - Parliamentary Procedure
Peyton VanWinkle and Laura Lyons - Gold -State Runner-up and Qualifying for Nationals - Chapter Showcase Display
Marilyn and Sarah Synek - Gold- State Runner-up and Qualifying for Nationals - Digital Stories for Change Texting and Driving Video National Qualifier and $100 award winner

2.E. Recognition of SkillsUSA State Winners - Spencer Shield & Brandon Wright
Rationale:  Junior Spencer Shield brought home a gold medal for the second year in a row in Technical Drafting and Senior Brandon Wright also brought home his second gold meal in Electronics Technology, at the Nebraska SkillsUSA State Conference in Hastings, April 13 & 14.  By winning their contests, Spencer and Brandon have qualified for the National SkillsUSA Contest which will be held in Kansas City, Mo., June 23-29, 2013.
2.F. One-to-One Student Technology Presentation
Rationale:  Many schools have created 1:1 environments where each student is issued a school-owned device for 24-7 use on school-related projects and assignments.  Kearney Public Schools, and Kearney High School in particular, has been exploring the feasibility of creating a 1:1 learning environment.  This presentation will inform the Board of Education of our process to date and our direction for the future as related to 1:1 learning environments.
2.G. 2013 Nebraska Unicameral Update
Rationale:  Dr. Maher will report on the final summary of legislation that was passed in the 2013 session of the Nebraska Unicameral and its impact on schools in Nebraska.
2.H. National School Boards Association 2013 Education Conference Follow-up Report
Rationale:  The Board members who attended the NSBA 2013 Education Conference in April, as well as Dr. Maher and Dr. Renner, will report on the sessions they attended at the Conference.
3. Consent Agenda -
3.A. Approval of the Minutes of the April 8, 2013 Regular Meeting

3.D. Approval of KHS SkillsUSA Members Trip to National Contest in Kansas City, Mo., June 23-29, 2013
Rationale:  Two KHS SkillsUSA members have won their state competition and have advanced to the National SkillsUSA Contest in Kansas City, Mo., June 23-29, 2013.  We will ask the Board of Education to approve the trip.

3.E. Approval of KHS FBLA Members Trip to the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Ca., June 25-July 1, 2013
Rationale:  Two KHS students who are members of the FBLA Chapter have qualified for national competition at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Ca., June 25-July 1, 2013.  We will ask that the Board of Education approve this trip.
Recommended Motion(s):  Move to approve the KHS FBLA Members' Trip to the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Ca., June 25-July 1, 2013.
3.F. Approval of Revised Kearney Public Schools Facility Use Handbook and Rental Fee Schedule for the 2013-2014 School Year
Rationale:  Some changes have been made to the Kearney Public Schools Facility Use Handbook for the 2013-2014 school year.  One change is that building principals will now exercise final approval authority for Class I through Class V activities, where they previously exercised preliminary approval authority and final authority was given by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.  The handbook also references the change from providing a paper form to the SchoolDude online building request system now in use, and providing insurance information directly on the online form.  The handbook also reflects changes in the rental rates and in the custodial and maintenance service fees.
Recommended Motion(s):  Move to approve the Kearney Public Schools Facility Use Handbook and Rental Fee Schedule for the 2013-2014 school year, as presented.
3.G. Approval of Revised Student Fee Schedule & Guidelines for the 2013-2014 School Year
Rationale:  We will ask the Board of Education to approve student fees for the 2013-2014 school year.  The student transportation fee is included in the Student Fee Schedule and we are recommending an increase from $105.00 to $108.00.  We will recommend an increase in the band instrument rental fee from $90.00 to $95.00.  We will not increase the fee for orchestra because those fees are covering the costs.  We will also recommend a 5¢ increase in the cost for student and adult meals.  We are not recommending an increase in the cost of student activity tickets for next year.  We will recommend an increase in our facility use rental fees of 3% for next year, and that is reflected in the 2013-2014 Facility Use Handbook and Rental Fee Schedule.

4.A. Acceptance of Resignations
Rationale:  We have received letters of resignation from Sandra Pratt, 1st grade teacher at Kenwood Elementary School; Katrina Florell, art teacher at Kearney High School; John Vanderbeek, 7th grade math teacher at Sunrise Middle School; Emily Bargell, kindergarten teacher at Park Elementary School, Christine Suchsland, pre-school speech/language pathologist; and Elizabeth Fink, special education teacher at Horizon Middle School; effective the end of the 2012-2013 school year.  We will ask the Board of Education to accept these resignations.

Rationale:  We have received a letter of resignation from Douglas McCue, industrial technology teacher at Kearney High School.  His resignation is effective the end of the 2012-2013 school year. 
Recommended Motion(s):  Be it resolved that (1) the resignation of Douglas McCue should be and is hereby accepted effective at the end of the 2012-2013 contract year; (2) the Resignation Agreement with Douglas McCue should be and is hereby approved, such agreement to be placed in the personnel file of Douglas McCue; and, (3) the President or Secretary, or any other Official of the Kearney Public School District should be and is hereby authorized to sign, execute, and put the provisions of the Agreement into effect.
Action(s):
Be it resolved that (1) the resignation of Douglas McCue should be and is hereby accepted effective at the end of the 2012-2013 contract year; (2) the Resignation Agreement with Douglas McCue should be and is hereby approved, such agreement to be placed in the personnel file of Douglas McCue; and, (3) the President or Secretary, or any other Official of the Kearney Public School District should be and is hereby authorized to sign, execute, and put the provisions of the Agreement into effect.
